Some important excerpts from balouch.com

To keep the friends informed & intact, about some topics, I’m reloading some of the important discussions, which had taken place at www.balouch.com (with some modifications), pertaining to Lyari, Karachi, misc politics, religion & science tech.
Layri & Balochistan News
Lyari news updates in various time frame (formerly launched at www.balouch.com ) Many things have changed in Lyari. The place which once proliferated with gangs & criminals is peaceful now. Thanks to the peace agreement between Sardar Abdur Rehman (former Rehman dakait), and Arshad Pappu. Pappu went to the jail and Rehman have now joined politics, which is a good sign for Lyarites. Business, political & cultural activities are gradually restarting in the area, yet there exist gambling places in Chakiwara, supervised by the police / mafia. The whole Lyari is now under the control of Sardar Rehman, so something better than nothing. Roads are being reconstructed including sewerage upgradation, but joblessness is still a problem which should be addressed.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The leaders of Lyari are same i.e. they are celebrated leaders, they don’t need to do job but simply has to make fool people, Bhutto’s tag is still popular. Get a stage decorated with Bhutto’s / Mohtarma pics, the hifi party songs like ‘Delan teer bejan’, there you’ll become a leader! It is so easy in Lyari, but gradually people are becoming aware. There is no doubt that lot of construction work is being carried out during Mush & Zardari’s time e.g. KMC hospital at Bangi para (Kamaila Road) has been rebuilt for almost a gape of decade, where facilities are being provided to masses. Health care facilities have also improved at Lyari General Hospital but still it requires a full operational Emergency Wards like Civil Hospital, similarly, water, sanitation & schooling facilities are not better in the area.
The other reasons of drawback of Lyarit i.e. they are not smart / chalak & educated enough like Urdu speaking folks, where each & every family member is educated & doing their jobs.Certainly you cannot find a job, while wearing a large shalwar & short qameez as compared to wearing pantaloons….Baloch youths must recognize this phenomena… City Nazim Mustafa Kamal is uplifting major Urdu speaking areas of Karachi plus thanks to the party & ‘Bhai’ supports, their every youth have jobs & bikes….Visit Community Police Head office at Civic Centre, probe into the appointments, there you’ll find existence of non-Urdu speaking as hardly as 1% (i.e. Aatay men namak kay barabar).
Earlier, hundreds of Lyari youths have demonstrated at Karachi Press Club for jobs but nothing has been done so far.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was the slogan of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto that ‘Lyari bani Paris’ meaning Lyari will become Paris, but people of Lyari must realize that they are far better than dwellers of interior Sindh or Balochistan.. whom can be seen lying outside Civil or Jinnah hospital helplessly, as they still have to travel a lot to reach in Karachi, but here in Lyari, medical facilities are far better now. Near Kharadar, several private hospitals (through the help of Memon foundations are working properly), many Baloch families even come from Iran to get modern health facilities.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sardar Abdur Rehman (also known as Rehman Dakait & Khan bhai) was killed along with his 3 allies on the night of Sunday August, 9, 2009 around 1-2 p.m. His funeral attracted thousands of mourners, alongwith international humanitarian social worker, Abdul Sattar Edhi & famed figures. Police & government agencies are reporting that he was killed during police encounter but evidences are showing that he was trapped & killed in a farm house. His 4 X 4 vehicle was never shown, but instead of a Toyota corolla was shown to the media, it is amazing that during encounter no police personal received a single bruise, forget about the police, wounded or killed. Further according to doctors the bullets were fired from 3-4 feet distance. He had a head token of Rs.5 million, and the Punjabi Police Officer (Aslam Chaudhry) will enjoy this amount.
No doubt he was a criminal but due to his good work people also remember him as a ‘maseeha’ & recently there was a total peace in Lyari, Rehman had also good relations with PPPs ministers, his killing have not only sabotage the peace process in Lyari but also bring more miseries. Rehman was no doubt a hope for people of Lyari. The following link from dawn is also telling the true story:-
After Rehman’s murder, as people were predicting & feared the situation in Lyari is again worsening, yesterday night there was a clash between two groups at Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road, where Lyari Nazim, Abdul Rauf was wounded, his house was also torched to ashes by the gangsters.
It was the proposed planning of MQM pro Karachi establishment to sabotage the peace process in Lyari & Rehman’s killing was just beginning of the episode.
Presently Lyari is in the hand of various small groups, but Baba Ladla & Uzair (or Aziz Baloch) are quite famous, who are the members of ‘Lyari Peace Committee’. Small scale operation is also being taken by the Sindh police but no major arrests. More to come…
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The changing Balochistan
After the abduction & release of UNO official John Solecki, followed by the assassination of 3 Baloch leaders & the worst riots taken place in various internal parts of Balochistan, the situation is now under control, but various non Baloch inhabitants have been forced to migrated to their native places. It is also heard that in various schools in Balochistan, national anthem & national flag ceremony has been stopped, owing to threats from the freedom fighters (BLA), it would be nice if any native Baloch can come and share their views about the current situation, because it is better to be heard from observers rather from the media which simply pouring fuels to the fire.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Misc. politics
Iranian government is quite infamous for its persecution & violation of human rights. The recent drama & fraud in Presidential election is a clear cut evidence. Iran is actually a country of Shites (i.e. a place only for shias) & not a real Muslim country where people of every sects can independently practice their belief.. In the past hundreds of Baloch Sunni Ulemas / common people were killed publically or secretary. Balochs are still second class citizens in Iran.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sadly to say the president Zardari leadership is no more different than Musharraf. He is busy with collecting donations & surcharge. The recent Presidential order to undo Supreme Court decision for relief in petrol price is an open example. Certainly Zardari has its interest & commissions.
Shame on such government!
The whole new game of dirty politics is being played in Pakistan and GEO news with its print & electronic media network is playing a key role in all these drama to divert people of Pakistan. It is the biggest game against the people of Pakistan, who are already suffering from worst kind of inflation, lawlessness, political turmoil. Many former cases & secrets have been re-opened, interviews of ex-army officers (who turned out to be patriotic after a decade’s time) are being telecasted regularly. Dictator Musharraf is being protected & honored by Saudi Arabia:
In lieu, Saudi Arab is hopefully gaining a land twice the size of Hong Kong in Pakistan for cultivation purpose.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
GHQ attack hoax & Kerry-Lugar bill
The recent attack on GHQ (Army Headquarter, Rawalpindi, Pakistan) has become suspicious, after US authorities have shown their reservations that .‘whether it was a INSIDE job??.. This is most probably like unending mysterious of Pakistan like Hojiri camp blasts, Zia’s killing, Benezir assassination… This event is happened when Kerry Lugar bill is the major hot issue, where billions of US dollars will be paid as a ‘conditional aid’ to Pakistan. It is almost impossible for any terrorists to enter such tight security area with mass weapons & uniforms, how did they managed to befool several check posts?? besides their ‘intelligent area awareness’, as if they had the maps… & keeping the commando level personnel as ‘hostages’ for quite a long time, which must be the outcome of army training…. It is also pertinent to mention that this event & Peshawar blast happened precisely in the time when according to Pakistan army .major operation targets had already been achieved.. There must be involvement of inner elements of GHQ or it is an all drama, so that easy aid through Kerry Lugar Bill can be fetched & corrupt politicians & army can make ‘good use’ of it, the nation must not forget General Musharraf & Shaukat Aziz, who are enjoying their lives abroad…
Billions dollar aids were given 4 years back during the time of major earthquake in Pakistan, but no reconstruction & rehabilitation have yet done & helpless poor people are still on the open ground.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Rainy day in Karachi
Saturday’s (18th July, 09) rainy day in Karachi was the worst nightmare for Karachites. The heavy downpour was followed by ‘usual KESC electric breakdowns / tripping’, and the ‘no electricity’ situation was not stretched on hours but days!! as many areas of Karachi, especially Lyari is still without any electricity even after 48 hours!!.
After re-privatization of KESC, this power generating organization is left un-checked by the Pakistani government. Usually break downs, link tripping from Jamshoro & else are ‘routine matters’, yet the organization is shamelessly gaining ‘fatwas’ for power theft, as according to KESC Karachites do not consider power theft or kundas as a ‘sin’….But who will teach KESC that long breakdowns & higher tariffs are also ‘sins’ which are continuously being committed by the KESC and Karachites are mere sacrificial goats in all scenario…
After KESC, poor built roads & underpasses, which almost flooded with rainy waters are yet another proofs that Pakistani is a failed state (Nakam Riyasat). If this is the situation in such mega metropolitan city like Karachi then what will be going on in villages & towns….it is worthwhile to mention that Mohtaram jinaab Mustafa Kamal said that Karachites are ‘enjoying’ rain, well they are enjoying indeed, thanks for your award winning reliable constructions… Shame on such country which cannot provide proper electricity & infra structure to its people but claim to be a ‘atomic state’, every next month Pakistan army launches new missile technology, but remain unable to produce even a watt of electricity or a drop of drinking water…, and the leaders…. Don’t talk about them.. they live like lords in London & Dubai, owning, luxurious cars, villas, besides their children are studying abroad. Pakistani leaders always treat their people like insects. People of Pakistan are facing dark ages of the history as notorious Zardari i.e. an unworthy is the President of Pakistan!!! I don’t understand why Mohtarama Benezir (educated from Oxford, may Allah bless her soul in eternity) had compelled to chose such third degree person like Zardari as her husband?? who is now making decisions for people of Pakistan.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As the holy month enters into it mid, the power crises in all over Pakistan specially in Karachi has further been worsened. During sehri (sahoor) & iftaar timings, usual load shedding is common & people are using ‘candles’ during these times, besides shopping centres, boutiques are directly hit by the power breakdowns. Shopping trend usually accelerate after 15th of Ramadan in Karachi but it is for those who have successfully saved some money after the mind blowing price hikes of commodities & survived after the ‘holy month’
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Many areas of Karachi are still without electricity & water, as if Katrina storm hit the city (God knows what will happen in that case…) Yesterday people were protesting, torching tires, and trying to reach & record their protest in front of Sindh Minister House, Karachi but our ‘ever loyal police’ successfully halted the mob & filled the trucks with protestors. So agitation is also a banned item in this ‘failed state’…
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Ramadhan & price hikes
I’ve no idea what is the criteria in other Islamic countries during arrival of holy month of Ramadhan, but for traders in Pakistan this month is only meant for making more money.. As soon as the holy month arrives, prices of every daily commodities like flour, pulses, sugar, vegetables, fruits, milk & other Ramadan eateries go beyond the reach of ordinary people. The worst case is, after the holy month there is Eid, which is must celebrated festival by every person, but routine price hikes, horrible inflation has made these sacred festivals as financial burdens. Salaried persons, middle class & poor suffers a lot, they will fall prey of heavy debts & loans which they pay whole year. In all these situation our Moulvi sahibs are usually keep ‘silence’, they have no courage to speech against this money earning menace, except teaching people how to earn thawab in special nights …i.e. why in every Ramadan, before the arrival of Eid we always encounter with heart breaking news that poor people commit suicide for not arranging Eid clothes for their children!!
It is a matter of shame that in western (Christian) counties during sacred festivals like Christmas & Easter, usual prices are voluntarily cut down by the traders / government to even 50%, where people do shop & enjoy equally, but in Pakistan & other Islamic countries???? Personally speaking, in Pakistan, this holy month is only by name ‘holy’, otherwise for ordinary people this is ‘zehmat’. In each & every aftaari and sehri 200-500 per day expenses are usual, because every fasting person (rozadar) try to arrange iftaari for his family & children, as this is the only month to enjoy. Later arrangement for the expenses for upcoming Eid festival, where even an ordinary chappal or dress costs in thousands of rupees!! and think of a large family, having only one single earner…. Here are some current prices details of commodities in Karachi: Flour Rs.32-35/= per kg Sugar = Rs.48-50 per kg. Various pulses = Rs.40-120 per kg. Basan i.e. flour of pulse (a must item for making pakora items) is around Rs.70-80 per kg. Fruits like apple = Rs.50-70/= per kg. Grapes = Rs.80/= per kg Mangoes = Rs.40-60 per kg Milk = Rs.44 per liter Curd = Rs.60/= per kg Ordinary thandori naan are sold in Rs.5/= each!! (suppose a person have large family members……) Meat chicken = Rs.200/= per kg. Beef meat = Rs.200/= per kg Mutton (not even think about it) Rs.350-400/= per kg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (poor Muslim fellows only take it during the month of Eid-ul-Azha.) Dates (which is must & sunna) = Rs.60 to Rs.100/= per kg!! (Normal salaries of middle class are ranges from Rs.6000 to Rs.12000 per month, forget about the corporate culture who draw salaries as high as Rs.100,000/=, they are not in the category). Please note that cost of utility bills, medical, monthly children school fees, mind blowing Eid expenses including Eidees for children, & conveyance are not included. In every year, tailors increase stitching charges, presently the charges are ranging from 150 to 250 per dress, beside cost of clothes.. In Karachi Memon community are directly responsible for these artificial price hikes as they are the sole merchants of all kinds of groceries & fabrics. They depict as being hard line religious, having large beard & regular attendant of thraavee etc., but all their religious Olympics are mere drama & they are among the wicked in Karachi. In reality for them, .the money is GOD. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Science Tech..
Following are the excerpts from my scientific discussion about brain, dreams, memory. The discussion was held with our good friend nicked ‘ihb’, topic titled: sodium potassium pump.
Dear Ihb:
Thanks a lot for such useful brain information especially the image link of brain where different functional segments / emotions points are labeled. Now I’ve a question?? For many years, this notion has been disturbing me THAT if a person is by borne blind i.e. he didn’t witness even a ray of light, let alone the beautiful world with its detailed 3D definitions, in depth colors with several thousands tones & textures. BUT he do see DREAMS with utmost details, as we usually see dreams, where we walk in the garden, feel its fragrance, BUT actually without being ‘there’. SO how a naturally blind person can see dreams????.
Because the portion of the brain which is responsible for ‘seeing’ is there but eyes are not functional. The same question can be applied to all limbs, sensory organs of our body i.e.. If they do not exist naturally by borne, then how the brain’s specific part (which is responsible) for that organ functions??.
Since dreams are the outcome of our accumulated memories, we sense all the day or in our entire life, through our sensory organs i.e. eyes, ears, nose etc. but in case of non existence of any organs or partial or full disability, how our brain forms dreams?? Because what we experience in dreams are full freedom of motions & details….This is may be the most interesting question…..this will also prove that our memories are not dependent upon material existence of brain BUT reality is something else and deeper…..
In order to ‘register’ and ‘perceive’ outer world & any shape, color and characteristic of a matter, brain is totally depended on all sensory organs & their certain ‘associations. i.e. upon eyes, ears, nose, hands etc. Eyes are the only gateway where colors or chrominance details enter to our brain and suppose a person is by borne total blind, but he do see dreams with full color details which at the moment are not depended upon sensory organs by resides some other dimension of brain, so how is it possible for a person who don’t have any eyes by do see colorful dreams??. It is another topic that whether he or she is capable to recall or describe his / her dream’s details i.e. what was the colors. Because we forget 99% dreams, when we awake. Let alone other mysteries of dreams like future predictions etc.
Similarly the same notion is applied for hearing & smelling (In case a person is by borne deaf or without any sense of smell (which is quite rare, as compared to blindness & being deaf). Before I going to tell you something amazing, you’ll also agree that even an infant enjoys music, the beautiful nature, fragrance of rose, bright colors etc, while the infant have never been encountered before!!. E.g. when one make funny face & smiling face, children in response giggle but if you want to terrify them by crying loudly or showing them something horrible they begin to fear & cry…So what is it?? How such information is available in ‘advance’??.
The possible answer is, it could only be ‘embedded’ into their genes, i.e. information of various things have already been pre-written in some brain’s ‘templates. Various animals demonstrate same behavior, a new born crocodile, when coming out egg shells always run after water. A beast will still be a good hunter if secluded & kept away from his own kind….so it is logical to say that certain traits are not necessary to be learned but ARE EMBEDDED. In the same manner, we, human beings also observe that a son walk, smile & reacts like his father or mother i.e. ‘gifted he or she demonstrate ‘inherited traits’.
Such things are also the signs that we (human being ) are not simply composed of ‘matter’ but are more than that. It is not at all necessary to perceive & depend upon sensory organs but brain is a wonderland. Because the world we perceive through our sensory organs is not ‘outside’ but ‘inside’ of our brain. Perhaps it is a paradox for many people.
Unfortunately, our medical & science is quite infant in many fields & human brain is still considered the least discovered place. I’ve dig up everywhere, including personal enquiries from various neurologists and scholars but was not given a ‘satisfied answer’.
According to by borne blinds, they do see dreams, like common healthy beings, but the problem is, they are unable to describe the full details of the dreams, since they’ve not witnessed any color, detailed 3-day shapes in their entire life. They see their people, the ongoing events .and during the course of dream they are not blind!!. Dreams are the most mysterious things to be discovered, the best time to recall a dream is just after walking, one has to note down immediately the details of it (I usually do it). Because as soon as we engage to start our routines, it disappears in no time, except some unforgettable dreams, which are not deniable. I bet, try to interview a by borne blind…..
Science is still helpless to describe that how a person, when he is in deep rapid eye moment, encounters a world with full of its details without the help of its sensory organs (which are in state of ‘rest’ at the moment) especially touching & seeing. While hearing senses may be still active during our dreams. For example, if a dog is barking outside the street, and you are in a rapid eye moment (i.e. in the dream world) so may be what you see that ‘dog is chasing you’. In other words your brain is interpreting the sound of barking dog in other mean (dimension), since your eyes are shut down and you are lying on the bed (I hope you are getting my point). Theory of Attraction (will be discussed later) will also help any individual to foresee future events (in their dreams) but it requires skill, focus & dedication…It is totally another topic. May be, this mysterious trait of brain i.e. to see future events means that for BRAIN everything in this world has already taken place & finished!!! But to see & experience one has to ‘fine tune’ these frequencies. Inherited traits are simply ‘different physical behaviors’ .demonstrated by human being, since as a human being, we are much used to ‘fully understand’ facial expressions, body languages, speaking traits etc. i.e. why many a times we encounter that off-spring of a person demonstrate identical facial traits, physical movements like walking, talking (which are inherited and not accumulated by sensory organs), so we always see that one talks & walks like his father or mother... Even these traits remained intact & copied into other generations (if individuals are separated). Other traits like opting for forefather’s occupations like becoming a singer or painter etc .are always not genetically inherited but cultural, social and family based..
The lizard tail example is worthwhile to understand ‘reflex action’, where .sensory support is lost., but in order to understand the level of reflex action among human being one has to conduct experiments upon human being. What we see after sudden decapitation of human being, that heart still pumps for quite some time (in case of head decapitation) i.e. why blood flows with full pressure from the slashed veins of neck & throat ( I witnessed these horrible moments in videos, as Saudis /Sudanese practice with accused). May be some interested scientist can conduct research upon brain that during these moments of sudden head decapitation, what brain feels and sense when the whole body i.e. billions of nerves are lost immediate contact!! In the same manner, some eye witnessed also told me that during sudden blast, the human organs are also show reflexes like ‘lizard tail’…. May be these reflexes are the counter reflexes of last messages received from brains, while the brain is still bewildered that WHERE ARE MY BODY??
In case of limb or organ transplant, where even after certain ‘medial matching’ one has to use pills for his/her entire life is yet another chapter of reflexes, because the brain (the headquarter of our body system) hardly accept those organs, which were not remained its part. There must be something difference in the frequencies of neurological codes where body with its ‘genuine organs’ shares.
In Pakistan, each & every doctor (including specialists) have different opinions for diagnosing different diseases and amazingly each & every condemning & blaming other doctors. They prefer their own ‘recommended laboratory tests/reports’ (may be for some personal means). Finally the patient dies because of such failed experiments.
Many times, we read in newspapers that surgeons usually forget their surgical apparatus in patient’s body or some grave mistakes are done by them, costing one’s life. In various incidents in Civil Hospital, the victims were alive but even declared as dead by doctors!! Personally speaking many of doctors are my friend, but they are only master in their own fields. Once I enquired one of my doctor’s friend (MBBS from DOW), about the functions of ‘vestigial organs’ he was then dumbfounded. Another story is quite amazing when I was on a training session from my department, a child specialist (belonging from interior Sindh province) was my room-mate. While discussing about topic of interests, I mentioned planet Mars, he then childishly asked ‘What is Mars??!! Each year a lot of people in the world lost their lives or become handicapped because of doctors negligence & Pakistan is quite notorious in that field, thanks to the sub standard education system & wicked doctors.
Dow medical college is presently infested with large number of ‘girls’ than boys besides many position holders are girls too. No doubt, many of them after marriage will take care of kitchen business rather opting for a regular doctor’s career…
Homeopathic & alternate medicine, in some fields are far better for curing certain chronic diseases than Allopathic. For instance, one of my relative, having hepatitis ‘c’ have been told by the ‘specialists’, that he have to wait for his death, because there is no cure for his disease at this stage, but after using Balochi herbs amazingly he is recovering rapidly. Many locally assumed diseases like T.B, common flue, various forms of hepatitis, diabetic, cancer, aids, numerous viral fevers, cancer, epilepsy, parkinson are still un-cured!! So where is the ‘alleged medical progress’?? There could be some better treatment for eliminating cancer cell rather burning it gamma rays…
The sudden cut limbs or organs of humans do not show higher level reflexes but slight skin vibrations can be noted when the limbs are cut suddenly. Ask a butcher, he will show you such ‘reflexes’ when goats or cows are slaughtered…These reflexes are shown in ‘sudden decapitation’ when limbs are chopped off all of a sudden, without giving a ‘local anesthesia’..Only organs with a specified time frame & frozen in specific conditions can be re-transplanted to other patients (because the cells within these limbs or organs still active at the moment) which after sometimes die.

The real Lyari

By Aftab Ahmed Baloch

Note: This article will supersede all of my previous articles which are related to Lyari. This would be an update for Baloch readers living abroad or for those folks, interested in drastically unique Balochi culture, or simply interested in Lyari the mini Balochistan or a land of magic! Please note that the Lyari is a huge area, a slum with over one million inhabitants,stretching at one side from Lea market to Shershah, from Maripur Road to Garden on the other side, from Bihar Colony towards Kharadar. In each & every part of Lyari, people exhibits slightly varied Balochi dialect & culture.
The other purpose of this article is to make realized new Baloch generation & other non Balochs that Lyari is not simply a place of gangs, drugs & thieves but we had a glorious history, various famous figures were ordinary Balochs from Lyari. At the time when peace is prevailing in the quarter, we must portray the right picture of Lyari, i.e. the picture of its beautiful & bright people.

 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Lyari is changing, Balochs are learning, the course of geo political, socio economic events which were taking or still taking place are directly or indirectly influencing Baloch nation. New Baloch generation are no more interested running donkey courts or entangling with tiring football business but are more concerned in improving their academic, business & technical talents.

The Origin of Lyari…Glimpses from the past…
Before we dive into the present & future Lyari, about its Baloch majority inhabitants, let us turn the page of history. We start with the origin of name of ‘Lyari’ here we find several definitions like a Baloch historian Late Waja Yousuf Naskanti once said: ‘The word Lyari is derived from the word Lyar, i.e. the name of a tree that blooms in graveyards, or it means the deadly silence of the graveyard’, This phenomena sounds more logical in an essence that Mewa Shah is the oldest & earliest graveyards of Lyari, Karachi. Even the word Karachi is a twisted form of original ‘Kolachi’, presumed to be an early Baloch lady dweller of this fishermen’s village. A road from PNSC towards Boating Basin, Clifton has also named after ‘Mai Kolachi’. It is an adventurous root for most of Lyarites who thrill with their Vespa scooters on weekends or annual donkey court races are also conducted in this road.

Since the pre-partition time, Lyari & adjoining areas like Kharadar, Khadda Market remained the major business centres, owing to their location near the Karachi port. Early Hindu groceries Merchants (often known as Banyaas) were pioneer in the business. In those days sheedis & African slaves were working as a labor in such markets. In this article, including a rare picture of Lyari, pertaining to early 1900s, you’ll see African slaves with their donkeys at Lyari river. There is also the a painting image by Henry Francis Ainsile (dated back as 1850s), depicting Karachi as a small village made up of a cluster of fishermen’s huts on the three island of Manora, Bhit and Baba. Sheedis or Makranis of Baghdadi are the descendents from African slaves, mostly brought from Zanzibar during the arrival of British in the region. Later on with the passage of time, they got amalgamated with the native Baloch settlers. These cross marriages have brought a totally drastic pro African /Balochi culture in this town. Including this, many Balochs had also migrated to other Arabian & African countries, including Australia (my historic article titled: ‘from Lyari to Australia’ speaks the same story. Another rare photograph of a Baloch Police officer from Zanzibar: Gajyan Baloch (which can also be seen in this article) is worthwhile. In Arabian countries Balochs are called Al-Balushi, due to limitation in Arabic language. In the same manner, Hollywood actor James Belushi (whose descendents are from Albania, a country in Southern Europe) is also assumed to be a Baloch and interestingly origin of Baloch, Belushi, or Balucci sounds alike. However more research is required. Kurds are also believed to be the close cousins of Balochs, as their various customs, facial features, traits looks identical.

For example, Leva is a kind of pro African trance dance, which is still practiced in some parts of African tribe. Once West Indies cricket team were also visited in this little African village (Baghdadi, Lyari) and they were amazed to see their own kind of people in this region.

It is not simply a place of gangs, drugs…. Our previous brilliant statures

Within Lyari, Balochs are divided into strong caste and clan system. Those of African descendents (Makranis/Shedees and some Laasis with black complexions) are assumed to be inferior, than those Iranian origin Balochs, with fair complexions even blond, as their ancestors had also left their native regions to settle in Lyari. Marriages are also done within this clan system. Still now, these dark skinned Balochs are working as servants in superior Baloch families in Pakistani side of Balochistan, however, all inhabitants share common Balochi culture. In Baghdadi, Lyari (also known as little Africa), majority of dark skinned Balochs (although with a deprived background) are far more educated than compared to white race Balochs of Kalakot which are from inherited rich families. But in Lyari, during Gulf & Japan boom, various Dubai & Japan returned Balochs, irrespective of their races has now improved their living status and drastically two classes can be seen living together in a same Mohalla. For example, you can see a house with a tin roof sheet alongwith a multi story ‘glass tower’ which would be seen installed with split air conditioners. Still now, various Baloch families have multi nationality of different countries like Europeans, Canada & America. In Norway, Sweden and England after the fall of Reza Shah & Iranian / Khomeini Revolution & at the time of Z.A. Bhutto when Balochs were being persecuted in Karachi & Balochistan, various Balochs had already migrated abroad. During 1960 or 63, during the reign of Ayub Khan, there was a wicked plan to forcefully relocate Baloch population to the northern side of Karachi, it created hate & resistance, several protests were recorded in the area, including a mass protest under the umbrella of National Awami Party (NAP) at Kakari ground, Kharadar, where various Baloch leaders like Ataullah Mengal, Waja Akbar Barakzai, Waja Yousuf Naskanti, Lal Bux Rind, Master Yar Mohammad Baloch, including various non Balochs like Abdul Rashid Bangali were the pioneer protest leaders. According to eyewitnesses, the Kakari ground was occupied with hundreds of thousands of people, who were agitating against Ayub’s government, in the same time in Balochistan an army operation was also being carried out against Baloch masses & Baloch leaders like Mr. Akbar Bughti was in jail. Thanks to the record protests & people agitation that the enforced relocation of Baloch Lyarites was withdrawn by Ayub’s government.

Famed Baloch figures of Lyari, reformists, politicians, social workers, educationists…
Many famous Baloch figures were from Lyari, like Waja Ghulam Muhammad Nooruddin, (the former Chairman Karachi Fishermen’s Co-operative Society, and Councilor of the area). He was a reformist, dedicated social worker, he also among the enthusiasts from Lyari, who had welcomed Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah (founder of Pakistan) on his arrival in Karachi. Waja Ghulam Muhammad Nooruddin, was an intelligent & educated Baloch, he remained active during his tenure, he did some remarkable work like establishment of Lyari Community Development Project, where male & female Baloch students were given free education & technical training in different fields, like typing, electric wiring, tailoring centre, besides there was a full-fledged Library in the centre, sport area, boxing club etc. The community centre remained active until 1990s. Various NGOs had also established their camps in the vicinity. Under the guidance of Waja G.M. Nooruddin, a splendid exhibition, based on the works of Balochi handicraft, embroidery had also been demonstrated in this place, where Mir Rasool Buksh Talpur (Ex-Governor of Sindh 1972-73) was invited as a Chief Guest. Presently the centre, because of government’s negligence is in poor condition, after Waja G.M. Nooruddin, there is no one able in the area to look after. During recent gang war, the branch of First Women Bank (which was established in LCDP vicinity) was also looted & burned down by the gangsters.

Adjacent there, is a famous Bhayyai Bagh (Moulvi Usman Park), which was once a park, where television sets were also fixed for the local dwellers for watching television program, but now this area is barren & being used as a simple football play ground besides Nimaz- Jinaza are also offered in this ground. Some uplifts were carried out during Benazir’s tenure, but this couldn’t be maintained longer. This is the famous ground where renowned political leaders like Z.A. Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Shaheed Murtaza Bhutto and Imran Khan conducted their assembly & Jalsaa. Other famous figures of the locality were Syed Zahoor Shah Hashmi (He was among the pioneers and pillars of Balochi language & its jurisprudence), he had also compiled a Balochi dictionary, titled: Syed Ganj, based on his work, a library (Syed Hashmi Reference Library) in Malir by Professor Sabad Dashtiari has also been established, which have a large no. of registered members. The library not only occupied with rare Balochi books but also covers non Balochi titles too. Professor Sabad Dashtiari is currently engaged at Quetta University, as a faculty of philosophy & Islamic studies. He is a famous Baloch thinker, linguistic and poet. He also participated in several Balochi cultural related symposiums in Sweden & Norway. Prof. N.M. Danish is another name, he is also famous Balochi poet & thinker, presently he is settled in America, interestingly, these two guys are from black race. Waja Khair Muhammad Nadvi (late) (picture included) is also a famous figure among religious circle, as he had translated entire Holy Quran in Balochi language. Waja Haji Wali Muhammad, was also a notables of Gul Muhammad Lane. Another name was (Late) Professor Khuda Bux Baloch, he was a famous educationist, reformist, former Professor of Pakistan Studies at S.M. Science College, Karachi, Master Yar Muhammad Baloch (a zealous educationist of Lasbela, Balochistan) also belongs from Lyari, he was among the active young leaders when Lyari was being relocated during Ayub’s government, Waja Lal Bux Rind, M. Yousuf Baloch, Faquir Muhammad Baloch were also known figures and social workers. Anjuman-e-Bedaria Balochan in Lyari, had earned a great fame, which was jointly established by these educated Balochs.

Waja Sattar Gabole (a famous Barrister & politician of his time, also remained as Minister for Labor and manpower during Z.A. Bhutto’s time) was also from Lyari. Another name is Dr. Taj Muhammad Baloch; perhaps he is the only PhD Baloch in Lyari, except other Baloch PhDs which are within country or abroad like Dr. Inayatullah Baloch, Dr. Malik Toughi, Dr. Sabir Badal Khan, etc.

At this moment, it will be unkind for not mentioning the story & feats of young Muhammad Arif Barakzai (Late), he belonged to a very poor family in Chakiwara, Lyari, however, he was a brilliant & genius kid. He did his Matriculation with A-One grade from a local peela school in Lyari. Later he completed his B.Sc honors from Karachi University & succeeded to get a scholarship for higher education in Sweden. He also presented his thesis on South Asian Region Politics at Uppsala University, Sweden. His family was so proud of him, and was hoping for a better future…BUT an un-usual event has taken away everything from their lives… Arif was killed in an accident. May Allah bless his soul with eternal peace.

Non Baloch European scholars..

Mrs. Karina Jihani, senior professor & research scholar from Uppsala University, Sweden also researched & mastered in Balochi language, perhaps she is the only recognized non Balochi figure in Europe. Recently she is working on her new book about Balochi language & culture, based on her tremendous work on Balochi Culture & language she also once appeared at the title of Balochi Labzank magazine. Mr. Tim Farrell, another research scholar from England also remained in Kalakot, Lyari alongwith his family for couple of years to research on Balochi Culture & language, where he was provided full-fledged support from the Baloch community, even though later the area was infested with gangsters. During his stay he had been continuously attending different Balochi social ceremonies / Deewans of the community.

Balochi magazines, other famed figures, poets, sportsmen, singers, artists…

Labzank was the only & famous Balochi magazine of the community, but since then 2004-2005, it was discontinued due to financial & unknown reasons, Mr. Abdul Wahid Baloch remained the Editor of the magazine. Recently couple of other Balochi magazines like Sichkan, Suhato are being circulated in Balochistan area.

Waja G.R. Mulla, a Baloch poet & author of Bazn & Mr. Waja Baig Mohammad Baigul, a Balochi fiction writer & poet also hail from Lyari.

Professor Ali Muhammad Shaheen, (a Baloch from Punjab) is a known figure of Lyari, he is a social worker & famous for providing free law education near vicinity of Foot Ball House, Lyari, which is currently occupied by Karachi Rangers, due to situation of the area. Prof. Shaheen also participated in an election but was defeated by one of the PPPs candidate.

Apart from these known figures, Baloch journalists, Lawyers, Doctors, civil servants, businessmen, motor mechanics, Engineers, Bankers, teachers, nurses, are also part & parcel of Lyari life. However, ratio of active Baloch lady workers are less, as compared to male because of the tribal background & lack of education.

In the field of sports legendary footballers like Pride of Performance: Umar Baloch (Late), Ghulam Abbas Baloch, Muhammad Yousuf Senior, Ali Nawaz, Dad Muhammad, Ustaad Qasim, Master Ameen, Ghafoor Baloch, as well as the famed boxers like Hussain Shah, Rashid Qambrani, Sajid n Jan Baloch and what not the famous bodybuilder, Sikander Baloch (Ex-Mr. Pakistan, International Judge for Bodybuilding competition) also belongs from Lyari.

Like sports in the field of showbiz too Balochi artists are not lagging behind like old Balochi singers Faiz Muhammad Baloch (late), Sattar Baloch(late), Aziz Baloch, Noor Muhammad Nooral, Ustaad Shifi (late), Jarok, Amina Tooti & many more. Currently Abdul Rehman Sorayzai (from Baghdadi) is a famous musician from Lyari, he also performed & awarded in a concert at Sweden. Balochi TV artist Mr. Anwar Iqbal (originally belongs from Lyari) is equally famous all over Pakistan, he had the opportunity to work in famous PTV plays like Uncle Hurfi (as Qamar), including Qasim Jalali’s famous history dramas like Akhtri Cahatan, he had also produced first Balochi film titled: ‘Ammal Maanganj’, the concept & writer of the movie was Syed Zahoor Shah Hashmi. Ammal Maangang is basically based on true Balochi historical love story, like Heer Ranja, Sassi Punno, but this movie could never be released, due to people’s agitations, perhaps Baloch people were not mentally prepared for that break-through at the moment & Waja Anwar Iqbal had suffered a heavy loss. He is currently settled in Lahore & is working in various TV dramas of different Pakistani channels with leading roles. ‘Vash TV’ is a new arrival for educating Baloch people, it is basically a pure Balochi news & current affair channel but facing marketing problems. Other Balochi artists are Sarfaraz Baloch, Waqar & Danish Baloch, Zubair Takor, Raja (he also worked in a PTV drama as a Baloch Boxer), Yousuf Jan, Wali Raees, Mansoor Baloch, Sohail Baloch, Asad Wali (a brilliant kid with beautiful voice) are also famous figures not only in Lyari but in entire Iranian & Pakistani Balochistan including anywhere where Baloch lives. Every block buster Indian or English movies are dubbed in Balochi language, with excellent professional audio quality, these videos usually run at local Lyari cables or can be found in VCD/DVDs at Jan Video, Rainbow Centre, Saddar, Karachi. These are the only Balochi artists from Lyari, otherwise in Iranian & Pakistani Balochistan and abroad at Europe there are a large number of Baloch singers & musicians.

Currently after gang war a musical program was organized by a group of youths in Lyari. Actually there is a lack of platform & support from the government & community, otherwise Lyari is full of talents.

Political vacuum….the consequences….

During the gang war, and prior to Benazir Bhutto’s death (when she was at Dubai and PPPs political wheel was stuck), a larger political vacuum was created, which was apparently filled by gangsters but PPPs graph had already went down in Lyari due to behavior of its celebrated leaders & after the murder incident of Murtaza Bhutto. This notion was demonstrated during one of the local elections, when a Baloch candidate, Mama Younus Baloch (from Muslim League Noon group,) also gave a tough time to PPPs candidate (Waja Abdul Khaliq Jumma). But after the death of Benazir Bhutto, the situation is again in the favor of PPP in Lyari i.e. the sacrifice has settled ‘everything’.

The 18th October, 2007 was the day when hundreds of Lyarites lost their lives in a crowded procession during Benazir’s arrival in Karachi, later on 27th December, 2007 (at the time of Benazir’s assassination) the worst kind of riots had erupted in all over country especially in Karachi and Lyari, where dozens of warehouses, shops were looted & burned down by the party workers & gangsters.

Lyari has always remained the experimenting place for religious figures & Jihadist too. It was the time, when Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was out of the picture & 9-11 had already taken place. In these days, Lyari was the abode of so-called religious Pakhtoon extremists. They had carefully chosen this under privileged area for hiring & brain washing innocent Baloch youths for sending them to Jihad in Afghanistan, even drug addicts were not spared. Through the inflammatory speeches many youths, instead of family confrontation had actively participated in ‘Jihad’ at Afghanistan & lost their lives. With their increasing religious influences many Madarassas were also built up in the area, resultantly, people have become more & more religious, these impressions are visible like thousands of years old cultural traits have also been abandoned like majority of women are tending to use ‘full burqa’ with black hand gloves & socks, instead of wearing Balochi Chahdar.

Still now Lyari is the favorite visiting place for religious elements, every now & then a Moulvi with loudspeaker can be heard in un-usual times.

Even these incidents & drawbacks, Balochs are assumed to be more tolerant & peaceful people than any other community in Karachi. For example, there do live a little population of Hindus, Christians at Bangi Para, also there are Memons, Kachis, Bohris at Chakiwara, & some minority of Pakhtuns, & Urdu speaking masses together with Balochs but one can hardly hear any major clash with them. During the time of Indo Pak partition & riots, majority of Hindu families were protected by Balochs, except some later incidents where MQM terrorists had attacked some Baloch areas at Osmanabad and situation got worst, but in no case the majority of common people were involved.

The Present Lyari, hopes & fears…

Due to rise of gang actions i.e. routine target killings, firing, clash with police, seizure of shops, economical, political, cultural & sports activities were also halted. Majority of victims were Balochs & non Baloch shop owners were also forced for closure of their business or asked to pay extortions. In this phase, various families of affected areas also migrated to other part of Karachi. During this time, gangsters also looted empty houses by blowing them out through hand-granads. It was the scene of total destruction, people were without food & water, schools were closed down. Finally a complete clean-up operation was carried out by the government. But the main characters of gangsters went underground or fled away to interior Iranian or Pakistani Balochistan, while few main characters have now diluted themselves into politics.

The death of daughter of East, and Lyari ki Beeti have brought more miseries for Lyarites, as many of youths are still without jobs, which were earlier promised for them. Recently several processions & agitations were & still being recorded by Baloch Youths & PPPs co-workers. Many people of Lyari still believe that Zardari is directly or indirectly involved in Murtaza Bhutto & Benazir Bhutto’s murder and prior to Benazir murder & during her reign as a Prime Minster, when Murtaza was killed by agencies, Zardari had already become a disliked person in the area.

It is said that time is a great healer, thanks to the peace, revival of political, cultural & business activities in the locality, people are again coming back to life…The two rival gangs aka Rehman & Arshad Pappu groups have already bound with a peace agreement. Presently, many walls of Lyari can be seen with writings like Tera bhai mera bhai Khan bhai Khan bhai…. As Mr. Khan (former Rehman dacoit) has amalgamated himself into the politics. But really, he is doing some marvelous jobs for the poor localities like providing door to door supply of drinking water, reconstruction of sewerage lines & roads, eradication of gang activities i.e. extortions & mobile snatching incidents are also rare in the area.

The custom, foods, streets, places….
If watched over Google Earth many streets of Lyari depicts like jumble of labyrinths, here is a land problem. This area is thickly populated and holds vertical expansion, 3-4 multi storied houses are built upon 40-80 sq yards area, yet property value is still in the limits, the reason is Balochs normally do not sell their homes, many houses are from the time of pre-partition and were the property of Hindus. Even during the worst gang war, the people who had early migrated to other areas have now come back. However, at road’s corner construction of new flats can be observed, where minimum value of a flat is Rs.7-10 lacs. Usually these flats have been owned by rich Baloch families, many of whom are landlords or Dubai settled. The parking of these roads also packed with 4 wheels, land-cruisers. Fashionable beauty parlors, saloons can also be found over there. In the evening these flat dwellers rich youths can be seen walking in shorts while wearing headphones, while at the same place there are youths of old Mohalla working in Auto shops / garages in grease tainted clothes or selling mangoes / dates.

Jatpat or Kachi Market is a famous market near Chakiwara, Lyari, majority of Balochs from Gul Muhammad Lane, Singo Lane, Kalakot, and Bihaar Colony, even from Shershah or Hub Chowki do shop here. This market is amazing, everything which is related to Balochs are sold here. Be it Balochi darman (Balochi herbs), Balochi embroidery, soren machchi (salted dried fish), goraku (a kind of tobacco used in tobacco pipe / blower often known as Chillims), Iranian dates or goods like detergents, carpets, grease / motor oil, chappal, petrol / oil etc, even Iranian medicines are sold here, which are not common in any other part of Karachi. Goods transport facility from Lyari to interior part of Balochistan (which is a direct route to Iran) is also situated here.

This place is also a famous food street in Lyari, where Burger, Haleem, Chicken Tikka, Quorma, Qeema Paratha, Seekh Kabab, tea, milk & sweet shops, bakery can be found. Recently a Loss Vegas styled Wheel of Fortune (gambling centre) has also been set-up with the auspicious of Khan & Police Bhai. The ‘official timings’ of this wheel of fortune is after Nimaz-e-Maghrib, when crowds gather. The other traditional food specialty of Lyari are fried fish & its eggs (machi-e-aik) when fishing season is on, the famous sheek (seekh) is another fiesta where mutton, fat, liver & other ‘eatable organs’ are roasted on coals.

At Hasht Chowk, where good transporters & various hotels are present there is also a foot place. The famous Chicke Chargha is sold here. Actually Hasht Chowk is a round about (can be seen over Google Earth) with road ways to 8 different directions, however this place remained quite notorious for mobile & money snatching as I’m too one of the victims.

The closure…

In this beautiful magical labyrinth, every Baloch is becoming a hopeful person, they are learning from their past, they are now more committed with their future, they want to survive in this mega multi ethnic jungle i.e. Karachi. But they love their abode, no matter if it is the stink of garbage or hashish or donkey’s shit, in Lyari Baloch natives will always prefer to live with their own people, as they don’t want to separate with their unique heritage, loving memories of childhood, because for Baloch Lyarites there is no other beautiful place in the world but LYARI.
